Coastal defeats Campbell in home opener

BUIES CREEK, N.C.-Chelsy Kimes notched 22 kills, adding 11 digs and a pair of blocks to lift Coastal Carolina past Campbell, 3-1 (25-21, 16-25, 21-25, 21-25), inside the John W. Pope Jr. Convocation Center Tuesday night.

The Camels fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Chanticleers move to 2-5.

Kimes, a senior outside hitter, notched her 22 scores on 61 attempts, committing nine errors for a .213 attack rate. The Munster, Ind. native totaled 23.5 points on the night to lead all scorers. Junior outside Erika Lightsey chipped in 13 kills and 10 digs against the Camels, while Meghan Laffin registered eight kills. Megan Bickford added nine kills.

The setting duo of Lauren Alejo and Kelsie Mauck combined for 49 assists, while Lindsay Gill paced the Chants defensively with 24 digs.

Senior outside hitter Allyson Goldbach fueled the CU offense for the second straight match, posting 14 kills while hitting .289 (14-3-38) and gathering eight digs. Fellow senior outside Emily Werner recorded 11 kills, hitting .370 (11-1-27) with four digs on the night. Jordan Reaves and Caitlin Bendy each registered seven kills.

Junior libero Lauren Garza collected a career-high 27 digs, adding an ace and a kill. Paige Tortorello and Hope Leatigaga combined for 33 assists.

After picking up the 25-21 opening set win with a stellar .379 team hitting percentage, the Camels faltered in the next pair of frames, hitting a combined .081 (20-14-74) as Coastal snagged 25-16 and 25-21 victories.

In the fourth set, the Camels trailed 16-11 before rallying for five straight, led by a couple of Werner kills. Kimes answered again for CCU, however, wrapping two kills around a Camel attack error to put the Chanticleers u- 19-16. Goldbach would bring the Camels back within two at 22-20, but Lightsey and Kimes closed out the set and the match for Coastal.

The Camels will return to action this weekend at Wake Forest's Black & Gold Invitational. Campbell will see action against East Carolina and West Virginia in addition to the host Deacons.
