19th Century Mourning Customs & Traditions On Tuesday, Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. at the Holly Springs Cultural Center, the GFWC of Holly Springs invites the public to hear a short seminar presented by guest speaker, Melissa Cohn Lindbeck who holds a Masters degree in the History of Decorative Arts from the Bard Graduate Center in Manhattan. Lindbeck will discuss how in the 19th century, thoughts about death and the afterlife were part of everyday life. Due to the limited medical knowledge, unsanitary living conditions, and major epidemics, premature death was commonplace. Death most often occurred at home, and the funeral often took place at home as well. It was the responsibility of the deceased person’s family to prepare the body for burial and make all the necessary final arrangements.
The surviving members of the family were also expected to observe elaborate mourning customs and traditions. This seminar will explain those lost mourning rituals and help us living in the 21st century understand what it was like to live and die in the19th century!
