The Hawks kept the hometown fans on their toes until the final minutes of their conference match up against the Lee County Yellow Jackets on Friday night. The Hawks scored a TD early in the first quarter, only to have it negated due to a penalty, however Nick Hohns was able to follow with a 23 yard FG making it 3-0, which was the score at the half.

The Jackets responded with a TD in the third quarter, but the extra point failed, leaving the Hawks behind at the end of the third, 6-3.

In the fourth, the Hawks threatened after Cameron White picked up a fumble on a bad snap on a FG and ran it 40 yards, only to be brought down short of the goal line. The Hawks didn’t convert the opportunity to score on that drive. With their backs against the wall, the Hawks stopped a Jacket drive when Kent Burnette provided a clutch tackle in the red zone, giving the ball back to the Hawks with 2:30 remaining in the game.

A 20 yard run by Corron Boston and a 10 yard pass to Xavier Bailey helped improve field position. With only a few minutes left on the clock, the Hawks push to the goal ended when Marcus Jones pulled in a Mike Roach pass for a 40 yard play and the touchdown. Nick Hohns sealed the game with the extra point to put up a 10-6 lead with one minute to go. The Hawks defense held tough to protect the Hawk lead for the final minute of the game to shut out the lights on the Jackets .

Friday night’s victory was the first conference victory for the Hawks this season. They are now 2-3, and already tied their season high win record. They play the Imps in Cary on Friday, Sept. 25, and then return home to Golden Hawks Stadium on Friday, Oct. 2 for the Homecoming game against Panther Creek. Gates open at 6:30 p.m.
