The Imps struck again in the third quarter to put seven more up on the board and carried their 14-7 lead well into the fourth quarter. With the rain still falling, and the Purple Craze fans still hanging in and cheering on their team, the Hawks came alive late in the fourth. JJ Graves caught a 35 yard pass from Mike Roach to set up good field position. Graves found the end zone a few plays later with a 5 yard run. Nick Hohns followed with the extra point to tie the score at 14-14 with less than five minutes to play. With approximately 1:30 remaining in the game, it was up to the Hawk defense to make some magic. Coming through was lineman Tremayne Dennis, who stripped the ball from the Cary ball carrier allowing LB Kent Burnette to snatch up the the ball and run it back 50 yards for a Hawk touchdown. Nick Hohns once again came through with the extra point.
The Imps were not going to go down without a fight. With under a minute to go, Cary threatened with some crisp pass plays, but when the Hawks defense applied relentless pressure to the Cary QB and caused a fumble. LB Marcos Goldstein picked up the fumble and ran it 50 yards to the Imps 10 yard line. With the possession and 19 seconds left in the game, the Hawks were able to secure their second conference victory and go down in the record books with team’s first ever road victory. The Hawks record stands at 3-3 as they get ready to take on the Panther Creek Catamounts in Friday’s big homecoming game at Golden Hawks Stadium.
