In a letter to the editor, Hank Dickson responded to a letter from Vinnie DeBenedetto. Dickson seems to have assumed the elitist posture so prevalent among politicians these days. He claims to have his finger on our pulse and already knows how everyone of us would vote if the issue of going $10 million further in debt to fund a new community center were put to a referendum. How psychic of him.
I must remind Dickson that he does NOT have his finger on my pulse, nor on that of my neighbors. I suspect there are many others, too, who think contrary to his claims. Further, his claim that he wants to save us all the expense of the referendum, which he claims is $25,000, amounts to denying us the opportunity to stop the Town Council from burdening us all with another $10 million in debt. The pittance a referendum would cost, especially if it avoided taking on this huge chunk of debt, would certainly be worth it. I suspect that Dickson knows this.
My thanks to DeBenedetto for voting "No" on this item. I only wish Dickson and others on the Town Council would give us that same opportunity. The last thing we need is more debt, especially those of us who have been out of work for months (despite continuous job seeking efforts).
A gentle reminder to the Mayor and Town Council: A town isn't some impersonal thing. It is a collection of individuals. We have a right to say if we want to be further in debt. You have already saddled us all with a debt of $46 million (approx. $2,300 per every man, woman, and child in town). Enough!
Sincerely,
