For the second straight year, Fuquay-Varina High School's golfing champ Callie Thrower placed in the NCHSAA State Golf Championship.

Callie, the daughter of Rocky and Nell Thrower, was the number one player for this entire season, as well as most of last year.

"She was very consistent and she was a great role model for the younger players," said Coach Priscilla Clark.

The high school senior said she'd played a little in middle school and her dad had taught her everything about golf.

Last year she became more interested in the sport and joined the high school golf team and stated that she had learned a lot from Coach Clark and Coach (Scott) Sagester.

"I really like golf and have had fun on the team," Callie said.

Callie's first victory was in the regional tournament where she participated in a one-hole playoff and won her spot by winning a sudden-death playoff. From there, she qualified for the State Golf Championship which was played last week at Foxfire Golf Club in Pinehurst. In that tournament, she shot a 90 and 91, finishing in the top 50 of the entire state which consists of approximately 650 golfers in the 4A division.

"Under the conditions she played wonderful!," said Coach Clark. "It was misty and rainy part of the time."

The Fuquay-Varina High School Ladies Golf Team consisted of ten golfers: Callan Andreacchi (12), Jen Browne (9), Maggie Bryant (10), Maggie Coates (11), Abi Flanagan (9), Emily Gillikin (10), Allie Evans (9), Addie Mullins (10), Callie Thrower (12) and Constance West (9).

"I will miss the seniors tremendously," said Coach Clark.

"Fuquay should have a pretty good team next year," Callie said. "There are four freshmen on the team that have good potential. I hope they will step up to the plate."

Callie's plans after graduation include attending Wake Tech and later transferring to ECU or Appalachian State University where she'll major in art education.

"Callie is a terrific young lady with a great golf game, a never-give-up attitude, great student, superb sense of humor and I, for one, am going to miss her terribly when she goes off to college next year,' said Coach Clark.

"Young ladies like Callie you'd like to keep year after year, but we have let them grow and move on."
