Women can now get digital mammograms at the Ambulatory Imaging Center of Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. The center is inside the Johnston Medical Mall, which is across the street from the hospital.
Digital mammography is also available at Johnston Medical Center-Clayton, which opened in October. The outpatient center is on N.C. 42 near the U.S. 70 bypass of Clayton.
“This is new and powerful technology for the early detection of breast cancer,” says Ruth Marler, chief operating officer for Johnston Medical Center-Smithfield. “Digital systems allow us to offer state-of-the-art mammograms that are fast and easy. And it gives our referring physicians accurate images to use in diagnosis.”
Digital images are clear and easy to read. They offer an excellent view of the breast, especially near the skin line, chest wall and in women with diverse breast tissue types.
Another advantage is the quick turnaround time. Digital images are ready to be read within 10 seconds. And if a second opinion is needed, digital images can be sent electronically to a consulting physician.
“Providing outstanding diagnostic equipment for women is a vital step to good preventive health, and one we take seriously,” Marler added. “We’re so pleased to be able to offer this technology to the women of our county and region.”
To get a digital mammogram, women can ask their doctors to schedule a screening at either of the two Johnston Health sites. Or women may call the hospital’s community wide scheduling department at 938-7749 to make an appointment.
