Still together, still in love after all these years

“I can’t say it was love at first sight because I believe love is much more than a feeling, but it’s something a man and woman have to work towards together.”

Ms. Geraldine admitted that all the girls in town had their eyes on the handsome young man, David, a city boy from the “big Fayetteville” who was working temporarily in the Holly Springs area where Geraldine lived.

All the girls had their eyes on the handsome David, even her best friend, but it was clear to all that David only had eyes for the beautiful Geraldine. After much persuasion from young David, she finally agreed to allow him to ask for her hand in courtship.

Fifty years, ten children, 11 grandchildren, 2 great-grands later, they’re still holding hands.

When asked, what do you think it takes to make a marriage last forever? Ms. Geraldine commented without hesitation, “I think when two people fall in love and decide to get married they have to be prepared to look past the beautiful wedding dress and the big reception party and more so at the day to day “life” the good days and the not so good days of married life.” “They should go into marriage with the attitude of it being forever and when those not so good days come along, look for solutions rather than leaving.”

Mr. Bain further commented that he believes that one person in the couple has to be the one to “give in” when there’s disagreement between the two. He believes the trust they have between the two has made their bond very strong. “I know she has my back and she knows that I have her back as well.”

When asked if they would do it all again, Mr. Bain gave a big smile and said he would ask the same young girl for her hand in marriage, why? “Because there’s no other wife better than the one I have today.” Ms. Geraldine smiled with assurance even after more than 50 years together as Mr. and Mrs. Bain.

The Bain’s celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Dec. 24, 2009.
