Saturday Night Live pushes envelope too far with ConAgra comment

I wouldn't say that I avidly watch Saturday Night Live, but when I do catch it, I like to watch the Weekend Update. From the days of Amy Poehler, I started to enjoy the humorous spin on political topics.

I was up in time to catch my favorite part of the show last week, and much to my surprise, Seth Meyer mentioned that ConAgra announced last Monday it would begin a multi-million dollar campaign to reintroduce the Slim Jim after the explosion at the Garner plant last June.

Meyer said the new Slim Jim recipe would include 96 percent beef and four percent "Carl." I found the comment to be incredibly heartless on the part of SNL and the NBC company. It went too far. Even the audience didn't seem impressed by the joke.

Meyer then responded with, “It’s only four percent.”

The wounds are still fresh for family and friends of the deceased and those injured in the blast. Not that it would ever be couth to make light of such a tragedy.

It brought to mind jokes made after the Challenger space ship broke apart mid-air in 1986, which killed all seven crew members. For those close to the astronauts that died in that disaster, jokes certainly didn't help the healing process.

It is refreshing to see the people of Garner rally to help one another in a time of need – last June and even now. I hope we don't forget that there are families and friends still in need of comfort - even nine months after the accident.

Please take time to let them know you care. Each of those lost or hurt in the blast was and is an important piece of what makes Garner a great place to be.

While so many are fighting for the Southeast Regional Library to stay open or debating over the diversity in Wake County public schools, I hope we can find time to remember the ConAgra employees.
