The project includes 1,700 linear feet of elevated boardwalk and is to be completed by September. A volunteer group led by Pete Morris, along with Councilman Tim Sack and Holly Springs staffer Sabrina Thompson, park manager at Bass Lake, will construct the boardwalk.
“This is a great project that will provide a connection between residential areas, town parks and even into the Holly Springs downtown area,” said Kendra Parrish, senior engineer with the town. “We are very thankful to have received grant funds and the donated labor of Holly Springs residents.”
The greenway will become part of the Holly Springs to Apex northern greenway connection, part of a larger corridor that will run from Sunset Lake Rd. south behind the Bridgewater and Windcrest subdivisions, into Veterans Park, and then to Jones Park.
The grant was approved for funding through the state Department of Environment and Natural Resources’ State Trails Program. Design and permitting for the greenway was completed by the town’s Engineering Department. The greenway will be maintained by the Parks and Recreation Department.
The raised boardwalk is to result in minimal impacts to existing wetlands and hydrology, Parrish said.
“Another great (greenway) connection on the horizon will be the connection of sidewalk along Holly Springs Rd. between Raleigh and Main St., sidewalk along Raleigh St. from Earp to Holly Springs Rd, and sidewalk along Earp St. from Main to Raleigh,” she said. “This will connect the existing segments of sidewalk and provide a continuous connection from Jones Park to Town Hall where citizens can shop at the Farmer’s Market.”
She said the sidewalk project will be funded by a grant from the John Rex Foundation.
