Carolynn Woods, a local author shares her frustrating and painfully honest experiences in her mixed marriage to an Aspie, in her debut book, ‘The Aardvark’s Wife’ (published through Author House, 2009).
Woods describes the steps of her journey in a surreal marriage seemingly taking place on another planet. She moved from feeling a need to fix herself and the marriage to the realization that neither she nor the marriage had ever been broken.
Follow her through the years of frustration to her “A HA” moment when she learned her husband had Aspergers Syndrome, a high functioning form of autism. His inability to function as an intimate and social partner within the marriage and society was a key symptom of this neurological disorder.
Learn more about how this disorder impeded and clouded her understanding of her distant and unresponsive partner and her desire to save their marriage.
People with AS are often left undiagnosed since they are usually highly intelligent, capable professionals and rarely struggle with the common disabilities of classic autism.
For the Aspie, there are support groups and resources. However, the spouses of Aspies find little in the way of support or understanding from their community or from their friends, family or professionals.
All Booked Up will be hosting a book discussion with Carolynn on Saturday, April 24 at 2 p.m.
