The Hawks boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Wilmington Tuesday evening, May 4 to play Hoggard in the second round of the NCHSLAA playoffs. The threat of rain and storms did not dampen the spirits of the team nor did it hinder the Hawks’ fans from making the two- and- a- half hour trip for the 7 p.m. weeknight game. The excitement of playoff lacrosse was in the air and they weren’t about to miss out on a minute of it. The Hawks didn’t waste time finding the net in the first two minutes setting the pace for the rest of the game. Hoggard quickly answered with two goals, less than a minute apart. The scoring and excitement continued as Holly Springs and Hoggard each scored a goal with less than one minute left in the first quarter. The Hawks dominated the second quarter which ended with the Hawks up 6-4. But the third quarter belonged to Hoggard, giving them the lead going into the fourth quarter, 7-6. The Hawks scored the only goal in the fourth quarter ending the game in a tie. Both sets of fans remained on their feet cheering on their team. Other than a small three minute window the entire game was just a one goal differential. Going into overtime you could feel the desire from both teams as they fought for the chance to advance. Just one-and-a-half minutes into overtime, Corron Boston found himself open and took a quick shot on net for the game winning goal. The Hawks celebrated their victory on the bus ride back to Holly Springs arriving at 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, now just two days away from game three against Apex. Alex Dantzler led the team with five of the eight total goals.

Patrick Citron, Tyler Galvin and Corron Boston had one goal each.

Game three against Apex was a hot, sunny evening at Apex High School. The Friday night playoff game brought out a large number of fans for both the Cougars and Hawks. The Hawks had a 15-2 record going into this game with both losses to Apex (7-8) and (4-6). The Hawks were physically and mentally prepared for this game. The first quarter started strong with outstanding defensive play by goalie Spencer Stouthamer along with senior defensemen Mike Schleglemilch, Frank Price, Greg Sturm and Leo Diaz only letting in one goal. Tough defense continued to dominate the play on both ends keeping the shots and goals to a minimum. In the third quarter alone there were a total of six goals scored, ending in a one goal differential, HSHS five and AHS six. This was the tight, fast-paced game of lacrosse the fans came to see. Marcos Goldstein scored for the Hawks early in the fourth quarter to tie the game but Apex quickly answered with two goals in less than two minutes. Holly Springs came back with a dynamite shot by Sterling Tarr with three minutes left in the game. The Hawks had the momentum and a number of opportunities but were unable to find the net, ending the game with a 7-8 loss and their 2010 season with an impressive 15-3 record.

Marcos Goldstein led the Hawks with two goals and one goal each from Tyler Galvin, Devon Lepsch, Greg Sturm, Alex Dantzler and Sterling Tarr.

The playoff games were successful for the Hawks this season due largely to the senior leadership of Mike Schlegelmilch (C), Frank Price (C), Corron Boston (C), Greg Sturm, Leo Diaz, Tyler Galvin, Spencer Stouthamer and EJ Lilie. Their work ethic and commitment to the team is unsurpassed. Obviously, these student athletes will be greatly missed as they continue their journey on to higher education along with new life experiences this fall.
