Census Takers are your neighbors – people from your community, hired by the Census Bureau, to go door-to-door and collect census information from residents that have not sent back their 2010 Census forms. If the home next door to yours appears to be vacant, a Census Taker may come to your home to inquire with you if you know the status of the neighboring house. Please cooperate with the census takers to ensure an accurate count of our community is made.
To protect your safety and theirs, do not invite a Census Taker into your home or allow them in if they ask. Either stay in your door or step out onto your porch to answer their questions. They will not be asking for your social security number, bank account or credit card information. They will have an ID tag with their name and signature.
By law, the Census Bureau or their employees cannot share your answers with anyone, including other federal agencies and law enforcement entities. All Census Bureau employees take an oath of nondisclosure and are sworn for life to protect the confidentiality of the data. The penalty for unlawful disclosure is a fine of up to $250,000 or imprisonment of up to five years, or both.
