Seventh and eighth grade students in Mrs. DelaCourt’s Exploring Business Technologies class at Holly Ridge Middle School participated in the Junior Achievements’ Global Marketplace program. This program provided practical information about the global economy and its effects on student’s lives. Mary Steindl, Account Manager for Cisco Systems, volunteered to facilitate six classes April-June, 2010.

These are the concepts and skills that were included in the curriculum: Concepts-Business practices, Culture, Currency, Domestic trade, Embargo, Emigrate, Entrepreneurship, Exchange rates, Exports, Franchise, Global trade, Human resources, Immigrate, International trade, Market Productivity, Quota, Standard, Subsidy, Tariff, Technology, Trade, and Trade barrier. Skills-Analyzing points of view, Brainstorming, Critical reading, Gathering and organizing information, Interpreting maps, charts, and globes, Math calculations, Oral and written communication, Persuasion, Compromise, and bargaining, and Working in groups.

JA Global Marketplace is an interdisciplinary program that supports the attainment of several academic standards in social studies, reading, writing, and mathematics.
