AARP Driver Safety Class On Wednesday, Aug. 4, join your friends in a safety learning experience by taking this AARP Driver Safety Program, one-day, refresher course especially designed for drivers aged 50+ at the Fuquay-Varina Community Center. (Class is open to all age groups) This is a new course especially designed for those who previously were unable or chose not to take the traditional two-day course. The content is the same with an emphasis on course videos and an expectation that the participants will read video review materials at home. This is the oldest and largest course of its kind and it will bring you up to date on such topics as knowing yourself, your driving partners on the road, safe driving techniques, today’s highways and laws, your vehicle and you and judging your driving fitness. Experience has shown that most graduates change at least one of their driving habits as the result of taking this course. Such a change could save your life or the lives of others. All who attend will receive a completion certificate. Some insurance companies offer premium discounts to graduates. Check with your insurance agent. The class will run from 9 a.m. – 3p.m. (with a 45 minute lunch break and other rest breaks. Participants must provide for their own lunch.) Fee: $12 for AARP members and $14 for non-members (payable by check to AARP before class) to cover the cost of workbooks and training aids. AARP members must bring their membership cards to class. American Legion Post 116 Corn Roast, Chicken BBQ, and Sock Hop The American Legion Post 116 will host a Corn Roast and Chicken BBQ at the post, 6400 Johnson Pond Rd., in Fuquay-Varina, on July 24, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. followed by a Sock Hop from 7 to 11 p.m. Besides corn and chicken there will be boiled potatoes and slaw. You can eat in or take out. The Sock Hop will be D.J.’d by ‘DJ Ray in the House’ with old 50’s and 60’s music. The cost of a plate will be $6 and the dance is $5. For a plate and dance combo the cost will be $10. Additional corn will be $1 each. Every Friday night we have karaoke and dancing for your entertainment. We have two halls for rentals, too. Yoga in the Park Yoga in the Park is back for its third year at the Mineral Springs Park on South Main Street.
